From The Pastor

From the Pastor
A man was driving cautiously down the highway when suddenly a state trooper pulled him over. As the officer approached the car, he was all smiles. “You did nothing wrong, sir. In fact, we are doing a special campaign in which we are giving ‘excellent driving’ citations to drivers who show caution and good judgment behind the wheel of their car. Along with your citation comes a $250 cash prize.” The man said, “Wow! Thank you so much, officer.” The trooper asked, “How will you spend the money?” The man said, “I think I will pay my outstanding traffic fines and see about getting my driver’s license un-revoked.”
Needless to say, the officer was shocked, and even more so when the man’s wife leaned over and said, “Oh, officer, don’t listen to him. That’s how he always talks when he’s been drinking.” Just about that time a passenger, who had been asleep in the back seat, woke up, and, seeing the state trooper said, “See! I told you guys we wouldn’t get far in a stolen car!” The officer was about to arrest all of them when he heard a tapping sound coming from the trunk of the car, and a muffled voice ask, “Hey, when can I change out of these prison clothes and get out of here?”
These folks managed to talk themselves into a whole heap of trouble! So, how about you? Does your tongue ever land you in hot water? Do you ever say things that you wish you would just keep to yourself, or at least say it in a different way?
In his letter, James says when you open your mouth you are playing with fire. He says, “The tongue is a fire….” Think how we say, “What she said made my blood boil!” Or, “What he said really burns me up.” Or, “They make me so hot under the collar.” Yes, words are like a fire. This Sunday, February 3, I am going to be using my tongue to talk about this tiny, two-ounce slab of mucous membranes filled with sensory organs for taste and speech, as we continue our walk through the book of James, and also celebrate around the Lord’s Table for Communion, where Jesus used his tongue to invite us all to to come to him.

Quote of the Week
The true test of a man's spirituality is not his ability to speak, as we are apt to think, but rather his ability to bridle his tongue.”
